Having been in this line of work for over 30 years, there are certain kinds of wrecks that raise more concern than others. Single-vehicle wrecks and accidents involving teens are among the most serious, as those are the types of accidents that most often cause people to jump to conclusions. This is why it can be crucial early on to ask key questions and gauge the kind of responses authorities come up with.
The first question to ask is whether investigators had the necessary time and resources to properly document the scene. Without thorough work, important evidence like vehicle positioning, tire marks, and road conditions might be missed, leaving gaps in understanding how the crash happened.
It’s also important to consider whether a vehicle defect could have contributed. Issues like steering malfunctions, brake failures, or tire problems can cause a vehicle to swerve unexpectedly. These kinds of problems often aren’t obvious without a detailed inspection.
Finally, was crash-related electronic data preserved? Many vehicles store key information about speed, braking, and steering input right before a crash. Cell phone data is also important, and there could be security cameras at nearby residences that caught the incident on video. Collecting that data quickly can make a major difference in piecing together the true events.
If a family feels that authorities have satisfactory responses to these questions, it’s likely a sign authorities did a good job in their investigations. But if it seems like their responses are lacking, steps can be taken to ensure another set of eyes looks over the details as soon as possible.
