San Antonio, TX — February 11, 2024, two people were injured in a hit-and-run accident with a suspected drunk driver at around 2:24 a.m. on St. Mary’s Street.
San Antonio Police officials released initial details about the accident, which they say happened on North St. Mary’s Street just north of East Ashby Place.

According to officials, a 20-year-old and a 22-year-old were both walking along the sidewalk at the time when police say a Chevy Tahoe, which they suspect was driven by a drunk driver, somehow drove onto the sidewalk and hit them. That Tahoe then allegedly fled the scene, hitting a parked vehicle and then ultimately going off-road and hitting a fence. The driver then apparently abandoned their vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
The two pedestrians were both taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities have not said that they’ve located or identified the suspect driver yet, but they say they are considering charges for collision involving injury and failure to stop and give info. Authorities also mentioned that the driver allegedly left “multiple open cases” of beer in their vehicle when they fled the scene. That’s something that stands out to me, because it makes me wonder if there’s a local alcohol provider who may have illegally sold that alcohol to the suspect.
Let me put things into perspective. If there’s a bunch of alcohol still in the vehicle, it suggests the possibility that the driver may have already been intoxicated when they bought that alcohol. Well, the law is clear that it’s illegal for an alcohol provider to sell alcohol to someone who is a clear danger to themselves and others, and the driver here apparently managed to careen onto the sidewalk and hit two people just minding their own business. Is it possible someone capable of that was stone-cold sober when they bought the alcohol authorities found in the vehicle? Sure, but it’s a red flag to glaring to ignore considering there could be a local alcohol provider who also needs to face consequences for their role in this accident.
