Harrison County, IA — June 18, 2023, Steven T. Starkey, Julie Starkey, and a truck driver were killed and three others were injured in an accident on Highway 127 in Harrison County.
Sources report Mr. Starkey, Ms. Starkey, and three others on three motorcycles were believed to be traveling south on Loess Hills Trail when a westbound semi-truck allegedly failed to negotiate a turn on Hwy. 127 and drove through a stop sign at the intersection. The semi-truck purportedly overturned and entered into the southbound lanes.
Mr. Starkey, Ms. Starkey, and the semi-truck driver, Ronald Meeker, suffered fatal injuries.
The driver of the second motorcycle, a 2016 Harley, reportedly “dumped” his motorcycle onto the ground and jumped from the bike before being struck by the semi-truck. He was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.
Two other riders on a 2004 Yamaha motorcycle reportedly avoided contact with the semi-truck but were ejected from the bike. They were airlifted to another hospital. The severity of the injuries have not been released.
Investigators have not released what factors led up to the accident.
