There are certain details here that make me think this could be a highly unusual crash that requires particularly careful investigations. For one, it wouldn’t surprise me if some people were already jumping to conclusions about what led to the crash. Simply put, wrong-way accidents tend to involve intoxicated drivers. Not just that, but every case I’ve handled involving an intoxicated driver on the wrong side of the road happened in part because a local alcohol provider illegally over-served the driver. It’s possible that happened here, and that makes it important to find out if there’s a negligent party out there who needs to be held responsible.
That said, it’s not often a wrong-way crash happens just before noon. That makes me wonder if less common, more complex factors may have led to the crash. For example, there was a toll road here in Dallas that, for a period of time, saw an unusually high number of wrong-way incidents. After a research project, it turned out that crews installed the “Do Not Enter” signs too high, making them hard to see. Crews lowered those signs, and lo and behold, the number of wrong-way incidents significantly decreased.
I’m not saying either of these things led to this crash. That’s up to the evidence to say. However, I find people generally are too quick to jump to conclusions when there should be a prompt and thorough accident reconstruction working to tell the story. Hopefully authorities were able to dedicate enough time and resources to getting answers for those involved here. Otherwise, there could be serious details they’re letting slip through the cracks.
