Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a single-vehicle crash like this happens, it’s important not to jump to conclusions. Instead, it can be helpful to keep a few key questions in mind going forward:
- Did investigators have the time and equipment to document the scene thoroughly?
Without the right resources, critical evidence—like skid marks, vehicle position, and road conditions—can be missed, making it harder to understand what really happened. - Has the vehicle been inspected for possible defects?
Problems with brakes, steering, or tires can cause a driver to lose control unexpectedly. These kinds of defects usually require a close inspection, which often gets overlooked unless someone pushes for it. - Was crash-related electronic data preserved?
Many vehicles store valuable information about speed, braking, and steering input just before a crash. Securing this data quickly is crucial to fully understanding the events leading up to the wreck.
Asking these questions early on helps gauge efforts authorities are making. If they’re working to answer the same questions, that’s a good sign. If not, it gives victims and families an opportunity to put the crash in the hands of more thorough investigators.
