The cause of the crash isn’t clear right now. I have to wonder if that’s due to authorities not bothering to release all of their findings publicly or if they simply didn’t give the crash the attention it deserved. A lot of the calls I get from people are about car accidents where authorities jumped to conclusions or moved on before they had all of the facts. That’s why independent investigations can often reveal new, important details.
For example, even something uncommon like a mechanical defect needs to be considered. That sort of thing, however, takes a lot of experience, close examination, and state-of-the-art tools to properly look into. Not many departments equip officers with the necessary resources to do that. That’s how we get situations like the infamous GM ignition switch defect. Over a hundreds people were reportedly killed due to a defect that the public didn’t know about for years. It took multiple independent investigations to eventually connect the dots and figure out what had been causing all those wrecks.
Maybe nothing that unusual happened here, but there are many factors authorities aren’t typically motivated to investigate on their own. Defects, flawed road design, drivers being over-served by a bar, faulty tires, missing signage or lighting—common or not, getting answers means ensuring even unlikely possibilities get proper attention. I’d need to see a lot more information than current public statements to be confident authorities gave this accident that level scrutiny.
