According to authorities, a 30-year-old man was traveling in a northbound Toyota Camry exiting a private drive onto Richmond Avenue in the vicinity west of Greenville Avenue when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a collision took place between the front-end of the Camry and the back-left quarter of a parked and unoccupied Chevrolet Tahoe.
The man reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the wreck. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When it comes to single-car accidents, most people are quick to point the finger at the person behind the wheel. That’s understandable, considering the fact that human error plays a role in the majority of car accidents. However, I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. That is why, as a general rule, I don’t like jumping to conclusions.
That’s not to imply that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigations. As far as I am aware, driver error is still on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to point out that, hypothetically, the accident could have been caused by an issue with the Camry rather than driver error. What if, for example, it suffered brake failure? Or maybe the throttle got stuck in the open position? Has a steering mechanism issue been considered? Vehicles are complex machines; any number of things could have gone wrong.
Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the Camry. That way any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck will not be allowed to fly under the radar. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to understand not only how it happened, but why. That kind of clarity just does not come from surface-level investigation.
