How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people, on hearing about a single-vehicle collision in the early morning hours on the interstate, assume that driver error was the cause. I’m not trying to insinuate that that’s not a possibility; driver error plays a role in the majority of car accidents, statistically speaking. But I’ve seen plenty of cases over the last three decades where the investigation ended up unearthing evidence of causes that were not immediately apparent. That’s why I am not quick to jump to conclusions.

It’s not that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, the wreck could have been caused by a mechanical issue rather than driver error. What if, for example, the vehicle suffered a tire blowout, and that’s what led to the collision? It’s certainly not outside of the realm of possibilities.

Hopefully, the investigators, whether the authorities or a third party, get an in-depth vehicle inspection done. That way any underlying mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role won’t fly under the radar. After all, the people who were affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed picture of how and why the wreck took place. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
