How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s tempting for some to assume that single-vehicle accidents that occur in the dark hours of the early morning must be a result of driver error. While that is a safe bet—human error does play a role in the majority of car accidents—,I’m not so eager to make that assumption. Why? Well, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of single-car accidents over the last thirty years of my career. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation.

To be completely clear, I’m not trying to imply that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation would. As far as I am aware, driver error—whether it was a result of distraction fatigue, impairment, or something else entirely—has not yet been ruled out as a possible cause. However, I would like to suggest a hypothetical. What if, rather than driver error, the wreck was a result of something wrong with the vehicle itself? After all, motor vehicles are complex machines. Any number of things might have happened—tire blowout, brake failure, throttle issues, steering mechanism problems, et cetera—to lead to the collision.

Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth inspection done on the vehicle. That way any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck will not be allowed to fly under the radar. After all, the people left behind by the victim deserve a clear and detailed understanding of not only how the crash took place, but why. That kind of clarity simply can not be provided by surface-level investigation.
