Albuquerque, NM — February 17, 2025, one person was fatally injured due to a shooting accident which happened early Monday off Zuni Road.
Initial details about the accident say that it happened from Sunday night to Monday morning, and the shooting occurred in the parking lot of apartments off the corner of Zuni Road and Lead Avenue.

Right now, officials said that a group of friends was drinking “Sunday night into Monday morning,” before eventually going out to shoot a handgun. Officials claim that the group then “bought more alcohol” and returned to the apartments. While continuing to drink, reports say the owner of the gun shot one of the friends in the group.
As a result of the shot, the friend was killed. No other injuries were reported. The owner of the weapon has reportedly been charged.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
I don’t comment on criminal matters on this blog, but there is something else that stood out to me here. Authorities have been clear on their belief that this incident involved a lot of drinking. They specifically mentioned those involved had already been drinking before buying more alcohol and continuing to drink. This raises serious questions about where that alcohol came from and whether or not it was served unlawfully.
Texas and New Mexico have similar laws when it comes to alcohol providers over-serving their customers. While some specific details vary, the general idea is that it’s unlawful for alcohol providers to serve someone who already shows signs of intoxication. If a business serves an intoxicated person anyway, it may expose them to various consequences, including possible fines or liability for resulting injuries.
Again, there are no doubt many details not available to the public yet which could be involved in this incident. But when people see a situation allegedly involving alcohol, it’s natural to wonder if this all could have been prevented, perhaps by something as simple as an establishment cutting off potential customers rather than serving them unlawfully. If nothing else, it’s worth considering all possible factors anytime someone loses their life.
