Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this happen, it’s easy for people to assume they were caused by a brief lapse in judgment or bad timing. However, based on my experience, incidents involving large vehicles like dump trucks often involve multiple layers of complexity that require thorough investigation. This crash on State Highway 6 is no exception.
While the exact cause of the crash remains unclear, several critical factors must be examined. Overcorrection, as seen in this case, can often result from a combination of driver error and vehicle instability, especially in large trucks like dump trucks. Investigators will need to consider whether road conditions, mechanical issues, or even the load being hauled may have contributed to the truck veering off the roadway in the first place. In particular, dump trucks can become unstable if their load isn’t properly secured or distributed, making them prone to tipping or overcorrection in an emergency situation.
If the dump truck was operating under a commercial company, it’s important to examine whether the company ensured the vehicle was properly maintained and that the driver had adequate training. Large trucks require regular upkeep, and any failure in vehicle maintenance or safety training could have played a role in the accident. The investigation should look into the company’s practices regarding vehicle inspections, as well as driver training and protocols for safe handling of these large vehicles.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain vital evidence, it is crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
