Palatka, FL — March 17, 2023, a man was injured as the result of an accident where an 18-wheeler and a pickup collided on US 17.
Investigators said that the incident happened at around 8:00 a.m. along US 17 at the intersection of T R Williams Lane.
Details suggest that a tractor-trailer was in the roadway attempting to back southbound along northbound lanes. As it did so, a pickup crashed into the back of the trailer.
Due to the collision, the man in the pickup, a 26-year-old Palatka man, had injuries described as serious. No one else was hurt. At this time, no additional details are available.

While this appears to be a rather straight and flat roadway, I can’t help wondering why this tractor-trailer was backing into oncoming lanes. It’s inherently dangerous to impede traffic like that, and it’s likely illegal, depending on certain possible factors. It’s one of the reasons that prudent truckers either take extreme precautions making this kind of maneuver or otherwise avoid it altogether. Right now, there is no such indication that precautions were taken. So what exactly went wrong here, and how could this all have been avoided?
