Accident Report
May 8, 2026, a child was killed as the result of a school bus versus pedestrian accident around 3:38 p.m. along Bennett Avenue.
Officials reported that the collision happened at the intersection of Bennett Street and Ashton Drive. It appears a 7-year-old boy was with other children who were walking after a bus let off passengers just off Bennett and Ashton. The boy and at least one other child reportedly attempted to cross Ashton going northbound. As they did so, the school bus pulled away from its stop, made a right turn onto Ashton, and reportedly struck the young boy.
Due to the collision, the 7-year-old boy reportedly died. It appears no other children were hit. At this time, it’s unclear if authorities are considering any charges. Additional details are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Just to be clear up front, I don’t know anything more about this accident than what officials have released to the public. What really concerns me is how exactly a bus driver fails to notice a child crossing the street just moments after letting kids off and mere feet from where they did so. That is the time and place that any driver should be at their most attentive, let alone the professional driver tasked with getting kids to and from school safely.
Is it possible this was just some freak, unavoidable accident? Sure, and a proper investigation should be thorough enough to at least rule that out. However, in my experience, this sort of thing tends to happen due to a driver completely taking their eyes off the road. Was there a distraction in the bus? Was the driver on their phone? Did the bus have a camera onboard that might shed light on all of this? Was the bus driver someone with a history of making mistakes?
At the end of the day, answering these questions goes beyond accountability. There are other families out there who want to know there won’t be any further danger. Hopefully investigations aren’t simply looking for a bad guy here but are instead focusing on gathering evidence and putting together a clear chain of events. If there is a person or if there are multiple people who deserve to face consequences, that will naturally follow with getting the victim’s loved ones the answers they deserve.
