Accident Report
April 6, 2026, a driver and a student were injured following a school bus rollover accident at 9:30 a.m. on S. County Road 300 East.
Preliminary information about the accident says that the crash happened southeast of Angola in Otsego Township along the 5500 block of South County Road 300 East, just along the west side of Hamilton Lake.
According to officials, the school bus was going along CR 300 at the time when it apparently went off-road and overturned. As a result, the 71-year-old bus driver and one student onboard were taken to a hospital. Their conditions weren’t specified.
Authorities allege that the bus driver was using their cellphone at the time of the crash and recommended citations. The school district reportedly terminated the bus driver following the crash.
How Did This Accident Occur?
If allegations are true, then it would seem cellphone use is the direct cause of the crash. But is it possible there’s a deeper issue here? When a driver working for a company or a government agency gets into a crash, it raises important questions about that driver’s history. Have they been in trouble before? Were they released from past jobs for reckless driving? Did the school district do a proper background check? As a parent, these are all things I’d want to know before letting my kid get back on one of the school district’s buses.
