Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When crashes like this occur, people often focus on the immediate collision, assuming it results from a single moment of driver error. However, in my experience, fatal wrecks involving passenger vehicles and commercial trucks often have deeper, more complex causes that require careful investigation to fully understand.

What circumstances led to the Prius colliding with the box truck? Was the truck stopped or moving unusually slowly in an active travel lane, leaving the car insufficient time to react? Was the truck’s visibility reduced due to poor lighting, inadequate markings, or other factors? Were there external factors, such as road conditions or distractions, that contributed to the car failing to avoid the truck? Determining the exact chain of events is crucial in assessing how this devastating collision unfolded.

Beyond the immediate circumstances, it is vital to examine whether broader safety practices may have contributed to the wreck. Was the box truck properly maintained, including its brake lights and reflective equipment, to ensure visibility to other drivers? Was the driver trained to recognize and avoid hazardous situations, or did fatigue or distraction play a role? These questions often point to issues of oversight, where the company responsible for the truck’s operation may share accountability for what happened.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
