How Did This Accident Occur?
A multivehicle crash at a busy intersection like this often raises red flags for distracted driving or unsafe speeds. That’s why just about every car accident reconstruction I’ve been a part of looked into cellphone and vehicle data first thing. However, that’s far from where they stop, and it’s important victims and families know if authorities are going to keep digging, as well.
Say, hypothetically, that some kind of vehicle defect leads to a crash—brake failure, for example. That requires a lot of close analysis of the vehicles involved in the crash using special tools, often handled by professionals with years of industry experience and training. Any guesses on how often I see authorities do that on their own? The answer is I simply can’t recall the last time I ever saw that. So if independent investigators don’t step in, something important could slip through the cracks. Authorities could even end up blaming a driver for something that wasn’t actually their fault.
That’s just one possibility, of course, and it’s not even all that common. But when there are serious injuries after a crash, folks deserve to know there will be clear answers about what happened. If authorities can assure victims and families that will happen, then that’s good. If there are ever any doubts, though, it’s reasonable to consider other possible avenues for getting information.
