Rosedale, CA — November 5, 2024, Samuel Gray was killed in a truck accident at about 3:10 a.m. on Hageman Road/Old Highway 58.
Authorities said a 1973 Jeep was pulling a trailer while headed east on Hageman Road when it veered into the other lane. The oncoming 2022 International semi-truck was unable to avoid a collision, as the Jeep hit the back end of its trailer. The Jeep overturned after the collision when it veered into an orchard near Martin Lane.
Jeep driver Samuel Reed Gray, 75, died at the scene, according to authorities. The truck driver was not injured.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the accident at this time.
The crash remains under investigation.

When a crash involves a smaller vehicle veering into the path of a semi-truck, it’s easy to assume that the driver of the smaller vehicle was solely responsible. However, a thorough investigation should still examine all possible contributing factors to understand why the incident occurred.
One key issue is what caused the Jeep to cross into the other lane. Mechanical failure or an attempt to avoid another hazard could all explain why the vehicle veered off course. Investigators should examine the Jeep’s condition, including its steering and braking systems, to rule out mechanical issues.
The crash dynamics also raise questions about visibility and reaction time. Given that the Jeep struck the back of the truck’s trailer rather than the front or side, investigators should determine whether the truck was visible to the Jeep driver in time to avoid a collision. Factors such as road lighting, reflective markings on the trailer and whether the truck was making any maneuvers at the time of impact should be reviewed.
Another consideration is the condition of the roadway itself. Were there any sharp curves, poor lighting or other hazards that could have contributed to the Jeep’s movement into the other lane?
