Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Believe it or not, single-vehicle rollover accidents are among the most common type of crash I get calls about. It can surprise people how often authorities treat them as a low priority, ultimately allowing a lot of important evidence to slip through the cracks. If people don’t luck out and get a more thorough department with a dedicated crash reconstruction team, they can find themselves out in the wind unless a second set of eyes is looking things over.

For example, a family came to us with a case a while back. Their concern was authorities claimed their loved one was seriously hurt because they weren’t wearing a seatbelt. However, they insisted the victim always wore their seatbelt, so that just didn’t make sense. We had more experienced investigators examine the victim’s vehicle, and they found something authorities completely missed. Apparently, the victim’s seatbelt was defective, causing it to fail during the crash. The victim ended up suffering serious injuries which otherwise would have been prevented. Since authorities didn’t have the motivation, experience, or equipment to catch that sort of thing, they missed and instead jumped to conclusions.

I’m not trying to suggest something like that happened here, of course. It just helps to illustrate that authorities don’t always have all the answers. It could be that independent investigations here would show authorities already did proper, thorough investigations. Otherwise, if there’s more to this story they failed to look into, it may take outside efforts to bring the truth to light.
