Regardless of what happened here, there’s a concern almost everyone ends up having after a serious accident. I get calls all the time from people worried that they may not have all of the information they need or even that authorities may not have given the crash enough attention. It’s only reasonable to have these concerns, which is why I want to highlight some key questions victims and families can consider.

Did investigators have the time, tools, and experience to properly analyze the crash? Authorities don’t always provide officers with the resources needed for a thorough investigation, which can lead to incomplete reports. Were factors like traffic signals, sightlines, and road conditions carefully documented? If not, key details may have been missed.

Did they examine whether a vehicle defect played a role? Mechanical failures—such as brake issues or steering malfunctions—can contribute to a crash. Additionally, if safety equipment like airbags or helmets failed, the severity of injuries may have been worse than they otherwise would have been. Were both vehicles properly inspected before evidence was lost?

Did authorities collect all available electronic evidence? Traffic cameras, dashcams, and a vehicle’s Engine Control Modules (ECMs) could provide key data about speed, braking, and reaction times. Were investigators careful to preserve this evidence before it was lost or overwritten?

If victims or a family prevent these concerns to authorities, and authorities can provide clear, sensible answers, then it’s likely because they did a good, thorough investigation. However, if they fail to address people’s doubts and concerns, it may be a sign that there needs to be independent investigations looking things over to ensure nothing important slipped through the cracks.
