It’s important not to jump to conclusions, as something like this could be the result of something unavoidable, like a sudden tire blowout or a medical emergency. But there are so many factors that could be involved here that simply trusting authorities to handle it all themselves may also be imprudent. I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accidents, and one this chaotic isn’t likely to be within the scope of a typical police investigation. That usually means there needs to be independent investigations to confirm what authorities find or otherwise catch what they let slip through the cracks.

Let me explain why these truck accidents can be so complex. There are many questions that need to be answered after a truck accident which have nothing to do with common factors like speeding or distracted driving. Was the truck fatigued due to unreasonable deadlines? Did a mechanical failure occur? If so, was it due to an unusual defect, or did the trucking company fail to maintain the truck? Were the pipes not properly secured, causing them to roll into oncoming lanes when they shouldn’t have? Did some other reckless driver cause the accident? Does the truck driver or their employer have a history of reckless behavior or causing accidents?

Generally speaking, authorities aren’t often equipped or trained to look at evidence beyond the crash scene itself. As such, they tend to overlook maintenance records, training and hiring practices, medical history, driver history, and other crucial details that require efforts beyond that limited scope. So as prudent as it is to wait for answers before jumping to conclusions, it’s important to know that those looking for those answers have the experience and the tools to actually get them.
