According to authorities, 23-year-old Jessica Pacini and 19-year-old Ruben Benavides were traveling in a eastbound Hyundai Elantra in the area between the north and southbound lanes of U.S. 67 in preparation of crossing the northbound lanes of the highway and entering eastbound C.R. 258 when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for unknown reasons, the Elantra failed to yield the right of way to northbound highway traffic, entering the intersection at an apparently unsafe time. This resulted in a collision between the passenger side of the Elantra and the front-end of a northbound Ford Bronco SUV occupied by 42-year-old Jennifer Johnson-Cooley.

Benavides incurred reportedly fatal injuries as a result of the wreck. Pacini and Johnson-Cooley sustained apparently moderate injuries, as well. They were each transported to local medical facilities in order to receive necessary treatment.
