Ronald Shimek Injured in Truck Accident on U.S. 90 in Fayette County, TX

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, an eastbound Volvo 18-wheeler with a trailer in tow attempted a left turn off of the off ramp in order to head north on U.S. 90 at an apparently unsafe time, failing to yield the right of way to highway traffic at a stop sign. This resulted in a collision between the left side of the 18-wheeler’s trailer and the front-left quarter of the Ford.

Shimek suffered reportedly serious injuries as a result of the wreck; he was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. No other injuries have been reported. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When accidents like this occur, it’s natural for people to assume it’s based solely on driver error. However, based on my experience, crashes involving large trucks frequently have more complex causes that require a thorough investigation.

In this case, the collision was reportedly caused by the 18-wheeler’s failure to yield the right of way while making a left turn. Situations like these highlight the importance of both adherence to traffic laws and the unique challenges that large trucks face when navigating intersections. The size and length of an 18-wheeler make it difficult to maneuver quickly, and drivers must take extra care to ensure that they have enough time and space to complete turns safely.

There’s also a broader responsibility at play. If the 18-wheeler involved in this incident was operated by a commercial trucking company, that company could bear some responsibility for ensuring that its drivers are properly trained and that they adhere to safe driving practices. Companies need to be diligent in providing their drivers with ongoing education about the dangers of making unsafe maneuvers and the importance of strictly following traffic signals and signage, particularly at intersections where accidents are more likely to occur.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain vital evidence, it is crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
