Amarillo, TX — August 7, 2024, Ronald Blessen was injured following a car accident at around 3:49 p.m. along Hillside Road.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened off the corner of the Hillside Road and Hunter Drive intersection.

According to officials, 72-year-old Ronald Blessen was in a Ford F-150 going eastbound on Hillside. From the westbound lanes, it appears another pickup went across the center turn lane, side swiped an eastbound Toyota Rav4, then crashed into Blessen’s vehicle. As a result, Blessen sustained serious injuries. There were no other reported injuries resulting from the crash.

While authorities allege that the westbound pickup driver had been drinking, it’s unclear to what degree alcohol contributed to the accident. This is a significant detail to clarify. Folks tend to think that if authorities mention alcohol, it has to be the reason the crash happened. Legally speaking, though, things are rarely so simple.
For example, I’ve handled hundreds of cases caused by drunk drivers. In those cases, one aspect we have to prove is both that the driver was intoxicated and that their intoxication was the cause of the victims’ injuries. This can involve something as simple and effective as a blood-alcohol content test or more subtle details, such as bar receipts, security footage, witness testimony, and even texts or social media posts.
While authorities could look into these same details, they aren’t always motivated to dig into details beyond the crash scene itself. If they feel they can’t easily prove someone was intoxicated, they might just move on and leave the victims and families harmed by the drunk driver to figure things out on their own. Is this one of those situations, or have authorities been working behind the scenes to ensure there are clear answer for what all caused this and who’s responsible?
