When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks like this one, I’m often concerned about whether anyone will try to look beyond the seemingly obvious. Police mentioned the car went out of control as the driver tried to clean the windshield, but the two may not actually be related. There are all kinds of reasons someone can be in a crash like this without actually doing anything wrong. From road design to mechanical issues to medical emergencies to manufacturers’ defects, I’ve seen crucial details get overlooked far too many times.

Is it possible the Johnson County crash was the result of a simple but costly mistake? Of course, and I wouldn’t pretend otherwise. Is it also possible though that there’s more to this story and nobody may find that out if they jump to conclusions too quickly? Absolutely.

Maybe authorities have been more thorough that it seems here, but their reports don’t reflect that extra effort. It makes me wonder if this could is yet another crash where authorities missed something critical in favor of something obvious. At the end of the day, what matters most is ensuring that people affected by wrecks like this can be confident they have the whole story—even if just for the sake of closure. Has someone made sure the injured child’s loved ones feel that way?
