Hidalgo County, TX — December 13, 2024, Rogelio Benavidez-Urrea was killed and another person was injured in a truck accident at about 1:45 p.m. along Stewart Road.
According to authorities, 76-year-old Rogelio Benavidez-Urrea was traveling in a Honda on U.S. Military Road at the Stewart Road intersection when the accident took place.
Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, an 18-wheeler that had been traveling northbound on Stewart Road failed to heed the flashing red light of a traffic signal and a stop sign, entering the intersection at an apparently unsafe time. This resulted in a collision between the 18-wheeler and the Honda.
Benavidez-Urrea suffered fatal injuries, according to reports, and was declared deceased at the scene. The person who had been behind the wheel of the truck sustained injuries, as well, and was taken to a local medical facility for treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

When collisions like this occur, people often focus on the immediate actions of the drivers involved. While this is important, in my experience, wrecks involving commercial trucks often demand a deeper look to uncover all contributing factors.
Why did the truck fail to heed the flashing red light and stop sign at the intersection? Was the driver distracted, fatigued, or under pressure to meet a deadline? Could mechanical issues, such as faulty brakes or tires, have played a role in the truck’s inability to stop? These are critical questions that need to be answered to determine why this fatal collision happened.
Truck maintenance is another critical factor that must be explored. Given their size and weight, commercial vehicles require meticulous upkeep to ensure they operate safely. Were the truck’s brakes, tires, and other safety systems in proper working condition? Were regular inspections conducted to catch any potential issues before they became hazardous? Mechanical failures, if found to have contributed to the crash, could point to lapses in the trucking company’s maintenance practices or the driver’s failure to report issues.
The trucking company’s role also warrants close examination.
