Officials indicate that the dump truck may have been traveling at unsafe speeds leading up to the accident. It reportedly swerved to the left in a faulty evasive maneuver in order to avoid a rear-end collision with a passenger vehicle. In doing so, however, it crossed over the center line and entered the eastbound lane of traffic. There, it was involved in a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler which was hauling a trailer loaded with cement pipes. The drivers of both commercial vehicles were killed as a result of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When people hear about crashes like this one, it’s easy to assume they are a result of simple driver error. However, in my experience, accidents involving large trucks often require thorough investigations to understand all contributing factors.

First, it’s essential to determine why the dump truck was allegedly traveling at unsafe speeds. Was the driver under pressure to meet a deadline? Was the vehicle’s speedometer functioning correctly? Gathering data from vehicle event recorders, reviewing traffic camera footage, and analyzing witness statements can provide crucial insights.

Next, the trucking companies involved must be scrutinized. Were the drivers properly trained and following safety protocols? Trucking companies have a responsibility to ensure their drivers are well-prepared for the demands of the road. If the companies neglected proper training or pushed drivers to meet unrealistic deadlines, they might share responsibility for the crash.

Additionally, examining the condition of both trucks is vital. Were they properly maintained? Mechanical failures, such as brake malfunctions or steering issues, can significantly contribute to accidents. Reviewing maintenance records and conducting thorough inspections of the vehicles can reveal whether such issues played a role.

Investigations must go beyond the immediate crash scene to uncover the full story. This includes looking into the truck drivers’ logs, evaluating their driving histories, and consulting with accident reconstruction experts. By conducting a comprehensive investigation, we can ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Whether through obtaining vital evidence or, if necessary, conducting an independent investigation, it’s crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
