Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I read about a multi-vehicle crash involving two semi-trucks and a passenger vehicle, my first question is what sequence of events led to such a severe collision. Crashes involving multiple large vehicles and passenger cars often highlight issues of timing, visibility and roadway design.
One of the key areas investigators likely will focus on is the interaction between the two semi-trucks. Were they traveling too close to each other or the passenger vehicle? Professional drivers are trained to maintain safe following distances, but factors like heavy traffic or sudden stops can lead to dangerous situations. Understanding whether either truck driver had sufficient time and space to react will be critical.
The condition of the highway itself is also worth examining. Was there a curve, incline or intersection near Bethany Road that might have contributed to limited visibility or sudden changes in traffic flow? If this section of U.S. Route 82 has a history of accidents, it may indicate that roadway design or maintenance issues played a role.
Another important aspect is the passenger vehicle’s position and movement at the time of the crash. Did the car change lanes suddenly or stop unexpectedly, creating a hazard for the larger trucks? On the other hand, were the truck drivers operating at speeds appropriate for the conditions, or could one of them have been distracted or fatigued? Evidence from dashcams, black boxes and eyewitness accounts will be critical to piecing together what happened.
Finally, investigators should examine whether external factors, such as weather or road obstructions, played a role in this collision. For example, wet pavement or debris on the road can significantly increase stopping distances, particularly for heavy trucks.
Multi-vehicle crashes like this one highlight the need for thorough investigations that look beyond the surface. By carefully examining the actions of all drivers, the condition of the vehicles and the roadway environment, investigators can determine where things went wrong and identify ways to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future.
