One of the biggest challenges with single-vehicle wrecks like this is the victim isn’t around to tell their side of the story. That leaves a lot of room for speculation, and unfortunately authorities sometimes rely too heavily on their “gut” rather than actual evidence.
Here’s what I mean by that. Anytime our firm has independent accident reconstructionists look into a single-vehicle wreck, they touch on all kinds of possible factors. Some are unavoidable, such as mechanical defects, road hazards, poor road design, medical conditions, tire failure, etc. Others are more common, like speeding, fatigue, or distraction. When we look at reports from the authorities though, they rarely go beyond those more common factors, so they often just assume the victim must have done something wrong.
At the end of the day, it’s important to let the evidence speak for itself. Otherwise, important details can go overlooked, and issues that could be addressed instead end up slipping through the cracks. Especially for a family in need of answers, it’s important to fill in those gaps and m make sure all possibilities, unlikely or not, get ample attention from experienced investigators.
