If it’s true that alcohol was a factor here, folks may see this accident as open-and-shut. However, there could be more to the story if that alcohol was unlawfully over-served. Something authorities too often ignore is that negligent alcohol providers can also face consequences after serious accidents like this. If they’re not investigated properly, they could easily slip through the cracks.
For example, I had a case not long ago where a drunk driver hit a family head-on, nearly killing a kid. Authorities charged the driver and moved on, but the family wanted to be sure they weren’t missing anything important. They had us look into things, and the first thing we did was look into where the alcohol came from.
That’s when we found a bar that had unlawfully over-served the drunk driver. The guy could barely walk to the bathroom without falling on his face, but the drinks kept coming. Authorities were going to let that bar fly under the radar simply because they never bothered investigating anything beyond the crash scene. Thanks to the family wanting to be thorough, both the drunk driver and the negligent alcohol provider were held accountable.
I’ve handled hundreds of alcohol-related accident cases, and that’s unfortunately a common scenario. Drunk drivers are put behind bars, victims and families are left picking up the pieces, and negligent alcohol providers get off scot-free instead of taking responsibility for the burdens their actions led to. By taking these accidents seriously, though, steps can be taken to thoroughly investigate the events leading up to the accident and ensure there is full accountability. Have those steps been taken here?
