When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks, I generally take all details from authorities with a grain of salt. It isn’t that they’re going to get something wrong, necessarily. It’s simply that since single-vehicle wrecks aren’t always a high priority for them, authorities often miss important details.
There are a lot of unusual, complex factors that can contribute to a serious accident. Are there issues with the roadway? Was there missing signage or lighting? Did the victim’s vehicle experience a mechanical defect? Did their seatbelt or airbag malfunction? Likely or not, these things happen, and they deserve attention from experienced investigators. Short of that, authorities are bound to let something important slip through the cracks. I don’t see any reason right now why this accident would be an exception to that.
