Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a crash involves multiple vehicles and several victims, it highlights why thorough investigations are absolutely essential. Initial reports often provide only the bare minimum—who was involved and the outcome—but they rarely explain how or why things unfolded the way they did. Without digging deeper, critical details can be lost.

For example, were traffic signals functioning properly at the time? Did any of the vehicles have mechanical failures that contributed to the collision or worsened injuries? Was driver fatigue, distraction, or impairment a factor? Did investigators secure electronic data, like crash modules, cellphone records, or nearby traffic cameras, that could clarify the sequence of events?

Families affected by serious accidents like this deserve more than just a surface-level explanation. Only with a comprehensive investigation can they be confident that every contributing factor has been examined, and that their loved one’s side of the story is being told fairly.

Takeaways:

  • Multi-vehicle crashes demand more than basic reports—timing, vehicle conditions, and driver actions must be examined.
  • Mechanical failures and safety system issues can play a role in both cause and outcome.
  • Preserving electronic and physical evidence quickly is key to ensuring clarity.
