Southern Ute Reservation, CO — February 20, 2024, Richard Engstrom was killed and Dewayne Gruber Jr. was injured in a dual truck accident around 11:00 a.m. on U.S. 550.
According to preliminary information about the crash, it happened several miles south of Durango near the intersection of U.S. Highway 550 and County Road 218.
It appears that 22-year-old Dewayne Gruber Jr. was in a flatbed truck going northbound on the highway. 77-year-old Richard Engstrom was said to be in a southbound truck. For reasons unclear, authorities say Engstrom’s truck lost control, and it went into oncoming lanes where it crashed with Gruber’s truck.
Due to the collision, Engstrom ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Gruber was taken to a hospital with injuries described as serious. No other injuries were reported. Right now, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
