Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a crash involves multiple vehicles, leaves one person dead and several others injured it’s not enough to focus on who crossed the center line. A full investigation must look beyond surface-level fault and ask the three critical questions that reveal the complete picture: Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Has anyone examined whether a vehicle defect may have contributed? And has all the electronic data from the involved vehicles been collected and preserved?

According to initial reports, the 2022 Subaru Legacy veered into oncoming traffic, triggering a chain of collisions that ultimately led to the death of a motorcyclist and injuries to others. The first step in understanding what happened is a comprehensive reconstruction. Why did the Subaru cross the center line? Was the driver trying to avoid something in the road, experiencing a medical emergency or reacting to another vehicle’s movement? Road conditions, sight lines and potential obstructions near County Road 417 should all be examined as part of a full scene analysis. In multi-vehicle crashes like this, the timing and positioning of each impact are critical to establishing not just fault, but causation.

Equally important is the question of whether a vehicle defect could have played a role. The Subaru Legacy is a modern vehicle with a full suite of safety and driver-assist systems, including lane-keeping assistance and emergency braking. If those systems failed — or if a mechanical issue like a suspension failure, brake defect or tire blowout caused the vehicle to veer — it could completely change how this crash is understood. The same logic applies to the other vehicles involved. The Lincoln, BMW motorcycle and Mercedes-Benz GLC should each be examined for whether their respective systems performed as expected. In the case of the motorcycle, even a small systems issue or lack of warning time can mean the difference between a near miss and a fatal outcome.

The final, and perhaps most revealing, component is electronic data. The Subaru, Mercedes, and BMW are all equipped with engine control modules or onboard safety systems that likely recorded detailed pre-crash data: vehicle speed, steering angle, throttle position and brake application. That information can confirm whether the Subaru driver attempted to steer back into their lane, whether the vehicles behind had time to react and whether any systems failed to respond. Dashcam footage, GPS logs or traffic camera footage may further illuminate the sequence of events.

When a crash causes the loss of life and ripples through multiple vehicles, the community deserves more than a basic explanation. Only a thorough investigation that explores the condition of the road, the performance of the vehicles, and the digital evidence available can reveal the full truth. That level of diligence is how we find real answers
