One thing to keep in mind with single-vehicle wrecks is they’re not always taken seriously by authorities. The reality is some departments just don’t feel like they’re a high priority. Even dedicated, experienced officers who want to help can find themselves forced to move on to other work before they’ve had a chance to get answers. That’s when important details slip through the cracks.

For example, I had this case involving a family that was worried police were missing something. They kept saying the victim in the crash hadn’t been wearing their seatbelt, but that sounded very unusual. They wanted a second opinion, so we had a second independent investigations conducted. As it turned out, the victim had a defective seatbelt no one knew about. It failed during the crash, causing the victim to be seriously injured when they otherwise likely would have been okay. In the end, authorities ultimately blamed the victim for something that wasn’t their fault.

I’m not suggesting that happened here, but it’s important that investigations consider even unlikely possible scenarios. They may ultimately rule them out, but that alone can be significant for a victim’s loved ones. Either they learn information they didn’t know before, or they can rest assured they’re getting the whole story. It remains to be seen if those efforts have been made here.
