Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks, it’s important to understand that authorities are not always concerned with tackling every possible factor that could have contributed to the crash. I’ve had countless calls from families looking for answers who were surprised to find authorities only ever really looked for things the driver may have done wrong. Those are important factors, of course, but there could be extenuating circumstances to consider.

Did the vehicle have any defects? Did an emergency come up? Is the roadway lacking signage or lighting? Are there issues with the construction or maintenance of the road? Did a tire suddenly fail? Did the victim’s airbags and seatbelts function as expected? Likely or not, these things can happen, and families will rightfully want to know they’ve at least been ruled out.

That’s why I have a general rule of thumb when it comes to investigations from authorities. Simply put, if people feel like authorities are alleviating their doubts and answering all of their questions, authorities likely did a good and thorough job. But if they find themselves still asking questions and seemingly not getting any clear answers, there may be more to the story worth looking into.
