Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to a car crash where authorities have to let the evidence speak for itself, it always concerns me. Frankly, it’s troubling how many people call me about crashes where authorities had no witness statements or survivors to speak to, and they overlooked crucial information due to a lack of time, equipment, training, or motivation.

With single-vehicle wrecks, investigators need to be able to look into all kinds of complex possible factors. Were there mechanical defects with the vehicle? Was there something in the road? Was someone illegally over-served by a bar? Did a tire blowout? Did another driver cause the crash and flee the scene? These aren’t the kinds of things a haphazard, surface-level crash investigation is likely to catch. Families deserve to know they’re getting the full story, but that unfortunately tends to require efforts beyond police investigations alone to fill in whatever gaps authorities may have left behind. I don’t see any reason right now why this crash would be an exception to that.
