Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

I know from experience that a single-vehicle wreck can happen for all kinds of unusual or unexpected reasons. Mechanical issues, tire blowouts, animals in the road, roadway flaws, manufacturing defects, etc. Most people, though, just assume the driver must have done something wrong. This is rarely more tempting a conclusion to jump to than when the driver is a teenager.

Obviously, it would be ridiculous to overlook that crashes like this usually involve error on the driver’s part. But without clear evidence, one can’t rule out contributing factors the driver might not have had control over. So unless authorities are able to confirm more than what they’ve said in these public statements, no one should be trying to tell the victim’s side of the story for them.
