Accident Report
June 1, 2026, two people were killed and another was injured in a possible impaired driver accident just before 7:45 a.m. on East Stan Schlueter Loop.
According to authorities, two people—a 77-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman—were traveling in an eastbound Kia SUV on East Stan Schlueter Loop in the vicinity of the Velma Drive intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, a westbound Toyota occupied by a 41-year-old man veered left-of-center, entering the oncoming lane of traffic. There, it was involved in a collision with the Kia.
The man who had been behind the wheel of the Toyota—who had reportedly sustained fatal injuries due to the collision—was declared deceased at the scene. The two people from the Kia suffered critical injuries, as well. They were each transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive immediate treatment. However, the woman was ultimately unable to overcome the severity of her injuries, having later been declared deceased.
Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
I’ve been in this line of business for over thirty years. In that time, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze thousands of car accidents, many of which involved impaired drivers. At this point, there really aren’t that many solid details about the cause of this accident. Reports did state that the driver of the Toyota may have been impaired, but, until the autopsy has been conducted and its findings have been made public, we have no clear answer about what he was impaired by.
It could be that he was under the influence of prescription drugs, illegal drugs, alcohol, or some other illegal substance. Now, if it turns out that he was under the influence of alcohol, I think it would be prudent for the investigation to look into where he had been doing his drinking. If it was at a private residence, then that is one thing. However, if it was at a venue that sells alcohol—such as a bar or a restaurant—then that is another matter. Why? Because of the chance that he had been overserved (sold drinks even after being obviously intoxicated).
Most people are unaware of this, but Texas has a lesser-known tool called Dram Shop Law. If a customer is overserved, and that customer later gets behind the wheel of a vehicle and causes an accident in which someone gets hurt or killed, then Dram Shop Law can be utilized to hold the establishment accountable for its part in the wreck.
I want to make it clear that this does not mitigate the importance of the driver’s choices and actions in the accident. It simply allows for everyone involved to be held accountable, even if they were not phyisically at the scene of the wreck.
