Port Authority Officer Truck Accident on George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, NJ

It appears there was a Port Authority officer that pulled over a tractor-trailer which reportedly had two flat tires. The officer reportedly was outside of their vehicle and returning to their vehicle when the tractor-trailer rolled forward, hitting the officer. The officer was taken to a hospital. Right now, it’s unclear if any charges have been filed.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If these details are true, these are some pretty serious red flags. It’s one thing for a truck driver to keep driving on two flats, whether they knew about the flats or not. But for that same driver to then apparently fail to put the truck in park during a traffic stop? That’s the kind of behavior I’m talking about whenever I say how important it is to consider accidents beyond the accident scene itself. It’s not just about what a driver did to cause an accident; it’s about why. Is this an inexperienced trucker? Were they intoxicated? Were they working unreasonably long hours? Have they caused accidents before? If investigators aren’t answering these questions, they may not be getting the whole story.
