UPDATE (September 9, 2024): Recent reports have been released which clarify some of the details as to what happened leading up to and during this accident. According to these reports, 30-year-old Pedro Arroyo was traveling northward in a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck in the left-hand shoulder of I.H. 35 passing traffic backed up on the interstate near the Onion Creek exit due to construction in the area when the accident took place.

Authorities state that as the pickup attempted to re-enter traffic, the Silverado crashed into the rear-end of a northbound Ford F-250 pickup truck occupied by 32-year-old Annette Guerrero, 55-year-old Sandra Rivera, and two boys ages one and twelve. The impact caused the F-150 to overturn and collide with a Toyota Prius and a trailer being hauled by a Freightliner. Before coming to a stop, the Silverado reportedly continued on until impacting a Toyota Camry and catching on fire.

Arroyo suffered fatal injuries, Guerrero and the two boys from the Ford pickup sustained moderate injuries, and Rivera incurred minor injuries, according to reports. No additional information is currently available. The investigation remains ongoing.

One thing to consider with such a complex series of events is that authorities tend to prioritize clearing accident scenes and looking for potential charges or citations. This does not always align with actually getting victims and families the help they need. It would shock folks to see how many calls we get from people who find themselves weeks or months after an accident still looking for answers. It’s one of the reasons independent accident reconstructionists tend to be the ones who ultimately look into these crashes, as they can better help to ensure no important details slip through the cracks. The same could very well prove true here, too.
