Accident Report

May 31, 2026, one person was injured due to an alleged DUI accident that happened around 7:45 p.m. on the Gervais Street Bridge.

Officials said that the accident happened on the main lanes along the bridge. Authorities say a pedestrian was on the sidewalk along the eastbound side of the bridge. An SUV reportedly lost control, left its lane, hopped the curb, and hit the pedestrian. This threw the pedestrian off the bridge to the river bank below.

As a result of the collision, the pedestrian sustained serious injuries. Authorities arrested the driver for DUI. Additional details are unavailable right now.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Any accusation of driving under the influence is serious, and if the driver was indeed impaired, there could be more to this story. People might think it would be open-and-shut, but that might not be the case.

For example, there could be a vastly different legal process for the victims and families affected by a DUI accident if, hypothetically, a driver was on drugs versus if a driver was drunk. The latter could extend beyond the crash scene if a negligent alcohol provider unlawfully over-served the intoxicated driver.

I can’t say right now if anything like that happened here, but I’ve been a part of literally hundreds of impaired driver accident investigations. They rarely ever stop at the authorities filing charges. It’s important steps are taken to get the whole story and find a clear path to a resolution for the victims and families involved.
