How Did This Accident Occur?
A lot of people think single-vehicle car accidents always involve a driver making a mistake. That’s not always true.
What about a tire blowout? Objects in the road? A medical emergency? Issues with a vehicle’s automatic systems like lane assistance or crash avoidance? Maybe some other reckless driver cut the victim off, then fled the scene. Some of these things are more likely than others, and authorities may be better equipped to look into some factors more than others. This is why a lot of the families who come to me after losing a loved one in a single-vehicle crash have the same concern: How can they be sure authorities are getting them the whole story?
Generally speaking, I’ve found a good way for folks to gauge the official investigations. If they follow up with authorities, and police can address all of their concerns and questions adequately, that’s often a sign authorities are doing a good job. However, if their answers come up short and leave doubts, then that could be a sign the crash needs another set of eyes looking things over to ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
It remains to be seen how thorough the investigations into this crash are.
