Something I talk about a lot on this blog is the importance of never jumping to conclusions. I wouldn’t consider a crash like this an exception. Let me explain why I say that: Right now, authorities seem to suspect that intoxication was a factor here. Frankly, that’s the most common reason for a wrong-way accident. I’ve handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers who over-served someone to the point they drove the wrong way and got themselves or someone else hurt. At the same time, though, even these crashes can involve extenuating circumstances.

For example, a while back here in Dallas there was a toll road that saw an unusually high number of wrong-way drivers. After some research, it came to light that the warning signs along the tollway were installed too high. So, the signs were lowered, and the number of wrong-way driving incidents significantly went down. That’s not to say that happened here or even that it’s likely. But it’s an example of why it’s always best to let the evidence speak for itself, then find out what the next best steps are for those involved.
