Investigators suspect he was struck by an unknown northbound vehicle sometime after leaving his house around 9:30 p.m., but they do not have a vehicle description at this time.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Montgomery County crash. The accident is still under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Authorities likely are focused on finding the vehicle involved in this accident, but the witness statements, physical evidence and video footage that could help identify the vehicle also could clear up what happened at this intersection. Once the vehicle is identified, data from its engine control module could provide more information about the crash.
Did the vehicle try to avoid hitting the cyclist? Was the area well lit? Did the vehicle have a mechanical issue that contributed to the crash? A full investigation is the best way to answer these questions.
That should include a forensic examination of the vehicle if authorities suspect a mechanical defect may have played a role in this accident, although that is likely to require an outside expert. Most law enforcement agencies do not have the time or training for such inspections, but the bicyclist’s family deserves to know as much as possible about what caused this crash.
