Accident Report

Ashland County, OH — May 18, 2026, one person was injured in a truck accident at about 8 a.m. on Interstate 71 south of Ashland.

Authorities said a northbound semi-truck was heading north when it crashed into a disabled semi-truck that was parked on the right shoulder of the highway near mile marker 180. The crash caused the disabled truck to catch fire.

The driver of the disabled truck, whose name has not been made public yet, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after the crash north of U.S. Route 30, according to authorities.

The other truck driver was treated at the scene for unspecified injuries, authorities said.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Ashland County crash at this time. The accident is still under investigation.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Was the disabled truck fully off the road? Did it have proper warning signals in place? Was the other driver distracted, perhaps by a cell phone, at the time of the crash? I don’t claim to know the answer to these questions, but they are scenarios that should consider as they look into this crash.

Investigators likely will gather evidence from the scene, witness statements, data from both trucks and any available video footage of the crash. Cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time of the accident, but an independent expert likely will be needed to determine if a mechanical issue contributed to the crash. Most law enforcement agencies do not have the time or expertise for such examinations, in my experience.

A mechanical defect in either vehicle could warrant additional scrutiny of the trucking companies involved to determine if either one may have played a role in the crash. Maintenance logs and repair records should show if the trucks were properly maintained before the crash.

The injured driver deserves to know as much as possible about what led to this accident.
