The motorcyclist, a 20-year-old man, was seriously injured in the crash, according to the report. His name has not been made public yet.

The Buick driver, who suffered minor injuries, was cited for failure to yield the right of way while turning left, the report states.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s easy to assume that a driver who receives a citation from police is at fault for the crash, but that’s not always the case. For example, what if a mechanical issue affected the Buick’s brakes or steering mechanism? What if the driver had a medical emergency? What if police simply got it wrong? A citation is just one officer’s view of what happened, based on initial information from the scene. A full investigation is necessary to sort out what happened on I-35 Business.

Authorities should be able to gather plenty of evidence about this crash at the scene of the accident, but the investigation cannot stop there. It will take a forensic examination of both vehicles to determine if a mechanical defect contributed to this crash, but that must be done by a qualified expert in a laboratory setting. A medical professional must determine if a medical issue contributed to this crash. Both of those are beyond the expertise of even the most competent law enforcement agency, so the injured rider’s family may be forced to look beyond authorities’ view of this accident.
