Accident Report

Austin, TX — June 14, 2026, an Austin Police officer was injured in an alleged drunk driver accident at about 5:30 a.m. on Interstate 35/Monarch Highway.

Authorities said a police vehicle with its emergency lights on was blocking the right lane of southbound I-35 after an earlier accident near Howard Lane when it was struck by a vehicle. The impact caused the poilce vehicle to spin around

The officer who had been inside the vehicle was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after the crash, according to authorities.

The vehicle driver, who admitted he had been drinking before the crash, showed several signs of intoxication, authorities said. He was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Travis County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Authorities likely will investigate this crash carefully, since an officer was injured, but the probe should expand if blood tests confirm the vehicle driver was intoxicated. Investigators should look into where the driver had been drinking before the crash.

That matters because Texas law allows bars, restaurants and other alcohol providers to be held responsible when a patron hurts somoene after getting behind the wheel. If the driver was sold a case of beer or served a mixed drink when he was obviously intoxicated, that alcohol provider could share responsibility for the injury caused by this accident.

I don’t know if that is what happened in this instance, but the injured officer deserves to know who may have played a role in this crash.
