How Did This Accident Occur?
Police say these vehicles collided during a basic maneuver, a lane change, on State Highway 358, but it isn’t clear which vehicle initiated contact. That is why a full investigation is important. Once it is complete, we should know which vehicle caused this crash and why.
Was one of these drivers distracted, fatigued or impaired? Was one vehicle swerving to avoid an object in the road? Did one vehicle have a problem with its steering mechanism? Investigators should consider these possibilities as they pore over witness statements, evidence from the scene, data from the vehicles and any available video footage of the crash. Cell phone records could show what each driver was doing before the crash, but an outside expert could be needed to figure out if there was a mechanical issue with one of the vehicles. That is beyond the capability of most law enforcement agencies, in my experience.
The injured driver and his family deserve answers about how this crash happened. Did you see anything that could help in this investigation?
