It’s not unusual for there to be few confirmed details about a car accident in the preliminary reports. The questions is if authorities continue working behind the scenes to ensure no stone goes unturned. That’s where it can help to consider some key questions early on:

  1. Did authorities dedicate enough time and resources to investigating the crash?
Sometimes, car accidents are treated as a low priority. This can leave officers unable to do a proper analysis, and important details may slip through the cracks.
  2. Have the vehicles been inspected for possible defects?
Issues with brakes, tires, and other mechanical parts can lead to unavoidable accidents. Faulty seatbelts or airbags can turn minor injuries into serious ones. It takes a lot of training and particular equipment to spot such unusual, intricate issues
  3. Has all electronic data been preserved?
Modern vehicles typically store information about a vehicle’s braking and speed leading up to a collision. That, combined with cellphone records and any possible video evidence, can provide valuable insight on what went wrong.

If it seems authorities have clear answers to these questions, that’s a good sign. But if it instead seems like authorities can’t answer those questions, that may be a sign the crash would be better off in the hands of independent investigators.
