Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
With single-vehicle accidents like this, things can often be a lot more complex than people may realize. They’re rarely simple just because there’s only one vehicle involved. They can involve road hazards, tire blowouts, vehicle defects, alcohol, improper signage or road design, etc.
This stuff takes thorough investigations to confirm or rule out, and authorities aren’t always able or willing to make that kind of effort. Sometimes, they’re able to provide clear answers that show they did make an effort, and their investigations were thorough. Other times, families are left with doubts and unanswered questions. In my experience, if there are doubts about the details authorities come up with, then it’s prudent to have a second set of eyes look things over to see if authorities missed anything. If nothing else, it can provide a family with the closure they deserve.
